Albrecht Václav (Wenzel) Eusebius of Waldstein (von
Wallenstein), which were all his names, was born in 1583 at the Heřmanice
(Hermanicz) Fort to Margarete Smiricky, Vilém of Waldstein´s wife. Vilém was a
member of an old manorial family. Albrecht was an orphan since his 12 and he
was commended into foster care to Jindřich Slavata of Chlum. He attended
Lutheran grammar school in Silesian Goldberg, then he went on and studied at
Nüremberg Municipal Academy in Altdorf. Because of a disciplinary conflict he
had to leave it very soon. Following the advice of his uncle Adam of Waldstein
he set out on a then very usual knightly journey abroad. We do not know its
exact itinerary but he surely also visited Italy whose culture enchanted him.
Thanks to his studies and travelling Waldstein could speak many languages and
besides Czech, Latin, German and Italian he could partially speak Spanish and
French too. When he returned to Bohemia in 1602 ...
